The Car;

2007 = £13,500 value. looking to separate my father from his for my 17th birthday.
Myself;
Currently coming up to 16 so quite a long time left to go but want to start looking early. Have driven [legally] around private property since 13 safely and have mostly As at early entry GCSE.
Male, going to a highly respected university which is too far away from home to keep catching a train when I want to see the parents so a car is a must
Firstly how much (approximately) would insurance for a car like this cost for a 17 year old’s first car?
Keeping in mind my 0 years no claims bonus and I would be on my father’s insurance;
67 years old, no accidents for 21 years, no convictions etc – insurance for him on this car is about 700 a year if that helps
Thanks in advance,
Ian
Just adding it’s in the UK
Hi Ian,
First of all, I don’t know why you mentioned your GCSE grades or your Uni, it doesn’t make a difference to insurance companies how clever or stupid you are! They want to know your occupation i.e. Student; That is all.
Secondly, A LOT! As you probably know, insurance for anyone under 21 is always extremely over priced due to us lot being the people that crash the most! I would take a guess at insurance on the Exige being at around £9,000 (per year) minimum.
This may seem over the top to you but let me put it into the perspective of insurers. They see a 17 year old MALE (this makes a big difference) driving a 1.8 Supercharged engine with 0 no claims, and 0 driving experience (assuming you will be driving as soon as you pass). This doesn’t look too great, and although I agree its amazingly unfair as we aren’t all boy racers in souped up Corsa, we are assumed to be one of these statistics!
The insurance group of a Exige S is 20, to give you and idea; A 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa is group 3. A few of my mates have been insured on this car a 17, with no driving experience, and with their parents on the policy. They have paid between £1,300 and £2,500.
In a real world environment it wouldn’t be cost effective in the slightest to get insured on such a powerful car at your age, however if you have the money and your dad has the trust! to do so, then go for it.
A few tips on getting cheaper is to put your mum on the policy as well. Also, the bigger the excess (the price you pay if you crash) the cheaper the premium (yearly price) will be.
You can always go on a car comparison website and fill out your exact details, they should provide you with a quote. You will find that some insurance companies won’t insure you at all (due to the risk) and the ones that do will be very high.
www.confused.com is a comparison site in which you can get a quote from bare in mind you will have to put in false details and pretend you have already passed etc.
Hope I’ve been of some help.

First of all, the examiner will not permit you to take your test in an Exige due to the limited rear visibility. Secondly, being on your father’s insurance will cost him an astronomical sum. Thirdly, claiming that is your father who is the principle user of the car when it is in fact you is a fraud, known in the trade as "fronting", and the insurance companies know all about that. Fourthly, no-one including the insurance companies gives a damn what your educational capabilities are.
