Lotus will be unveiling the Scura at the Tokyo motor show, Autocar can reveal.

The car, which will be known as the “Stealth Edition” in Japan, is a tweaked Exige S, with 260bhp squeezed from its supercharged engine thanks to a modified ECU. In standard form the Exige S has 220bhp, with 240bhp available from a performance pack.

Launch control, Ohlins 2-way adjustable dampers, and variable slip traction control, are all standard on the track day special.

Special matt “Phantom Black” paint gives the Stealth its name, and various components including sports seats, centre consol, oil cooler inlet valves and front splitter are made of carbonfibre to help reduce weight by 10kg over the standard car. High gloss “Phantom Black” triple stripes run the length of the car.

The Scura will reach 60mph in 4sec, 100mph in 9.9sec and a top speed of 152mph.

The car will be limited edition and will go on sale in the UK. Order books open straight after this weeks Tokyo motor show and the car will cost £45,000 in the UK.

The last time we saw an American entrepreneur stuffing a powerful American-built engine into an unsuspecting British sports car, it was the 1960s and it was Carroll Shelby. The meek AC Ace roadster was, shall we say, invigorated by his fitment of the Ford V8 into its lightweight body shell.

Fast-forward nearly a half-century. Secant Vehicles, a small start-up headquartered in San Francisco, has developed a GM Ecotec engine conversion for every Lotus Elise (or Exige) built since the waspish midengine sports car’s 2005 introduction.

The players are different, but the three-step formula for the Lotus Exige by Secant is the same as Shelby’s:

Step 1 — Find a small car.
Step 2 — Add power.
Step 3 — Kick ass.

So has history been repeated? We drove Secant’s development car, a 2006 Lotus Exige equipped with the optional Track Pack suspension, to find out.
